In a re-thinking of our current structure, I came up with my own proposal for what we should change to, to be considered during the second meeting on feburary 4th
Group Name: Revolution: IDEA Reason: The nature of this name is to evoke a sense of movement and relavence in the current day. "Authoring Ideas", while writer-like, is both misleading in scope, and in purpose. I'm sure we can all agree that sitting around all day trying to author new ideas - that and ONLY that - is not any good for anyone.
Instead what we are about is approaching problems all with our own ideas, and through our collective efforts and determination, new ideas bloom between us. At the heart is our ability to work with each other, not to compete over new approaches in thinking - that will only divide us, and keep us from new ideas all the while.
IDEA stands for what now....? I really haven't come up with a good acronym myself, but I suppose that's the fun of it- everyone can come up with their own
Regardless of the name change, there's the problem of the forum being an ineffective means of valuable conversation. I'm not positive how to solve this yet, but I'm sure that we need to use what we can. And in many cases, that's the board. In others, it can be IM. But as we find more to our purpose, we may find more need to communicate with each other.
Anyway, the point of this thread is to discuss this before the meeting happens. Who all likes the name? Personally, I see great potential in it, unlike our current one.
P.S. I don't think revolutionidea.com is taken, so we might be able to find a home after a while....

"Authoring Ideas", while writer-like, is both misleading in scope, and in purpose. I'm sure we can all agree that sitting around all day trying to author new ideas - that and ONLY that - is not any good for anyone. Agree. Different views would benefit us, if that is what you mean by being divided. Name's fine, and can be changed pretty easily. I want to throw my idea ( ) out there now in case I miss/can't make it to the chat. And it is a fairly simple one. Open up the forum to a wider audience. You'd probably say you aren't restricting it... but look at things like the oath. Or the goals thread. I could be wrong, but I don't think too many people really accepted those. And some that did weren't many, so you may have left the others feeling like outsiders. (Pretty much my role, and sometimes afs's) What keeps a community alive isn't a group of people who agree. As annoying or wrong as you may find someone like me/just my views, I don't think you can deny I helped the board along when I was here. (Gander at the length of this thread: authoringideas.proboards75.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1187121397 ) So to open up the site, if you're on board with me, would be easy too. Switch to more inclusive terms. Call the forum a place for virtual philosophy and debate. Leave it at that, and let the community shape itself for the most part. (I'd recommend keeping your goals, but trying to influence the community with them through your posts) My last recommendation is based upon the idea of diversity/respected division. Allow users to join sub-groups on the forum, which should be reflected somewhere with their posts (you could just make a post outlining the groups, and people can put them in their sigs if they choose to). This helps because people would recognize those who they are likely to agree with or disagree with quicker and they'd at least feel like a part of the group a lot faster knowing that there are some like-minded people already here as well as a variety of others. You would get the sense of having a lot to talk about. That's my... fifty cents? ;D

hey I totally agree (ha!) - these are my proposals that I wanted to put out there before the meeting, as stated above. The entire purpose of the meeting is so that we can AGREE- because no matter what, that is the most important thing.
Alot of these things are just my ideas for the group that I'm putting out there for others to bat around. At the starting of this group, it was my hope that everyone would get involved with the building process (as you have above, thanks), and in a sense be leaders in building what would later become the community we made now. Not everyone took it that way, though, and so there was a general loss of interest - mostly from people feeling isolated, ironically enough.
So no I'm not forcing the group to commit to anything. They must make all the decisions (at least important ones) - I'm just providing my own opinion to the mix

Alright...
Three points to make before I rant:
1) Guess who's back? (Can't keep a good man down)
2) This thread's a month old, but hasn't been acted upon yet, so I assume it's still relevant?
and 3) I really do hate that my return is on a negative note, but what're you gonna do?
No, before you define the "Idea" in "Revolution: Idea," shouldn't you first define the "Revolution?"
Not saying it's not a good name (or concept), but what is the revolution in this group? Understanding? Open-mindedness? Tolerance? Peace and love and all that? As noble an effort as it is, could it really be accurately described as Revolutionary?
Just a thought. I might be missing something.

Welcome back afs. Now, I'll put forth my thoughts on this. I did propose it after all.
A revolution is a new way of doing things, in this case. Here, it means instead of young people progressing through the ranks of society, and making a difference through their own singular effort, we create a sort of home base for people who want to lead change through untraditional means, and, in other words, a means of their own making. Each person would be able to contribute their own passions and talents to the evolution of a unique brand of influence and change. There are many ways I personally know of changing things, and the possibilities grow with more opinions and people to get behind things.
This is, in a sense, a way of freeing those who join, through sheer force of numbers, from the currently existing forms of influence. We- those involved - would create our own ways of doing things. We would find our own issues, leaders, and ways of making a difference. Some of these will involve a large group of people, no doubt, and others will be individual, like learning the ins and outs of writing.
Make better sense, now?
