Oftentimes, we find ourselves wanting to say things that have already been said in detail - ideas we agree with, concepts that were already solidified. Well, let others know the source of your information!
You don't need to reinvent or rewrite ideas, in fact, by getting what's already established out of the way, you gain ground in your argument faster and more efficiently.
There are several ways to reference in posts, two of which are:
1. Using (without the spaces) for quoting a brief saying or a passage of an article to sum up a part of your argument. 2. Simply stating a concept and providing a link to where we can learn more about it (wikipedia is a good source)
Such references to ideas are found easily online.
Probably the most significant effect is one not directly beneficial to the organization of the discussion. By covering what has already been established, investigated, analyzed, and clarified in the past, you open the topic up to new ideas, which can come from a detached view at these old ones.
It is not recommended, however, to use this as a means of hiding behind your ideas. Even well established ones, like, say... despotism, communism, and genocide... can come under fire. Always remember that at the heart of an argument is the idea, not winning or losing.
