Since Oliver put me down as a mod all of a sudden (without my knowledge, you should note), I guess he wants me to post here. 'tay.
I want to cover three points in this thread: * What is constructive posting? * Why should we post constructively? * How can we do so?
What is constructive posting?
To keep it simple, constructive posts add value to a thread without taking things away from it.
Why should we post constructively?
We should post constructively to better communicate our goals: * Adding knowledge * Building community * Maintaining openness
Destructive posts, on the other hand, do the opposite.
How can we post constructively?
* use positive language - this will prevent people from shunning away from your message because you chose curt words * use facts - personal attacks go against all of the above goals * use words like "not" and "no" less - research shows that people understand consistent messages better than contradicting phrases.
This thread -- as all threads in this forum will be -- is a work in progress. Please reply to improve this advice. I'll edit the post and give you the credit :-)

Nice to note that the occasional silly post isn't evil, but well, humor is important too and doesn't mean that the poster is a fool.
I figured I'd say it so no one freaks out at anyone who makes a non-serious reply somewhere...

Silly and humorous posts can be constructive ^_^
Now, if you mean jokes that could seem destructive out of context, that depends on your perspective. Personally, I say that I prefer humor that builds rather than denounces; however, some of the funniest things I've heard, seen, or read were at someone's expense. Maybe that says something about me and my character...

Yeah but random, thread-derailing humor isn't really constructive, is it?

Not necessarily, but it can keep the mood up. It's easy to refocus a topic, and we have rules in development now about not simply trying to derail topics... or something like that.

Less trying to maintain the site, More trying to have fun and enjoy the time on the site! Meeting new people and being here for a reason! Not making cliques and sticking to them!

Except that the site has a purpose, so it should be maintained AND you should have fun =)
*wonders where the 'cliques' part comes from* O.o

Probably from the people in the comittee.... well, anyone is welcome to join- we just need to get things done, so the people who are there and willing and dedicated to the site, those are the people we have on the comittee. But it's not a clique.

It's by no means an evil, just in a way the formation of site administrators and heavy talks about it can maybe seem a bit threatening as well as create a certain separation...
