I posted this on AW but hey, this is its own forum so I'm asking you all, too.
Did anyone else not notice what genre they were writing in until the WIP was almost done? I don't even think I realized I was writing a fantasy story until I finished the first draft. It was quite a revelation...considering I was writing from Greek mythology and the gods were some of the characters. Clearly I'm living in my own, badass world.

Clearly, you are ;D
With fantasy is very different, because how can it not be fantasy when it's full of... well... fantasy? The rest of the genres just build themselves using my story, though. If it's not fantasy I've no idea what the hell it'll be until half-way through.
Of course... reaching the middle is quite an accomplishment in itself...

Yeah. I think it was because I didn't ever think about the genre, only the story and the characters, them especially. Like it's so real in my mind that it isn't fantastic at all. Weird but not weird. Ah, dammit, I don't write fantasy!

For my WIP (which I keep finishing...then keep re-editting...), at first I wanted it to be a mix of fantasy and science fiction. Let's just say it was...not...beautiful. I finally went back and took out all the elves and wizards (yeah you heard me XD) and made it purely science fiction; no magic or anything crazy like that. Now I like it much more, and feel like I could go somewhere with it.

I don't think I've ever been confused about what genre I was writing...
Actually, this one time I started something about a kid in boarding school that was supposed to be a nice coming-of-age YA thing. Then some creatures appeared and all hell broke loose and it turned into horror. It was pretty crazy. By the end of the book the universe was in danger of being destroyed.
Thankfully, it was saved. And all before Christmas break, I think...

It's not really a matter of confusion...it's more about not realizing that it's fantasy or whatever. Now I'm just in denial.

I'm a complete fantasy writer when it's my personal writing; however, my WIP has more classifications that I first realized. For example, you can classify it as a Creation story : )
It's mostly in my head, though, so I don't plan on discussing it in the WIP thread. It'll be many years before it comes to fruition. Then, I have to rewrite it a hundred times =D
Wheeee!
