If human being found no pleasure in sex, would society exist? Would there be culture?
Discuss.

There would be no people : )
Among animals, for example, one to two things seem to drive sex: pleasure or a compulsion created by pheromones. Although the 'biological clock' can play the compulsion-role, that's not strong enough to continue the species.

Damn translation barriers. I meant erotic pleasure, as in, we have sex all the time because we like it and not only for reproduction.

I think that the pleaure of sex contributes greatly to our culture and society. Most of the entertainment media of today is based on sex- magazines, music, television (this mainly refers to larger countries, not the more primitive countries. Still, the erotic pleasure of sex plays a big role in even the most technologically underdeveloped countries as well- it's just not portrayed the same way). In that aspect, I think that our world would be much, much different if sex was merely a biological compulsion and not something to do for fun when the parents aren't home.

Yeah, sex has played an important part in the development of our culture, either through sexual repression or through sexual expression.
Anyone read 1985?? I liked the idea of sex portrayed there.

Right, I understood that. And my response is that the human race would never have made it to this day if we had never gained erotic pleasure from sex; in addition, we would probably die out if we suddenly stopped gaining erotic pleasure from sex, though there would be many to strive on until the bitter end.

Never heard of it. What's it about? I'm never sure of the damn title. You know, the novel about Big Brother, Miniluv, Minipax, doublethink, etc? YOU of all people must've read it. A very brief summary of the sex idea portrayed in the novel is that the govnerment made the people repress their sexual urges so that they could turn that instinct into a frantic agressiveness that let them be controlled more easily by the Party.

It's 1984 by George Orwell. I'm working on reading it right now.
If that helps you talk about it DamaNegra.

I dunno, there are women who go their entire lives without ever having an orgasm, but they have kids. Asexuality isn't as major, I guess, when you're the chick. Apparently the rate is about 1% of adults.
If there was no erotic pleasure whatsoever, I'm doubtful. Probably if it was only the females who derived no pleasure from sex...the human race would survive.

Awww, how sad. Then again, I use the multiple orgasm retort a la Friends. Uhm, if you don't get the reference, no worries...

Well course the multiple orgasm is the other end of the no orgasm but still, it wouldn't really matter if women got no pleasure as long as men did.

Without enjoyable sex, at the very least there would be more people going to Heaven since they didn't commit that one cardinal sin, but I don't really believe in Christianity and all that so in that case, it wouldn't do much. Without the ability to use sex for it's actual purpose, the world would be very grim indeed. Has anyone read "Children of Men"? All females go barren and every male except one cannot make healthy sperm. Just randomly, of course, and no explanation is given throughout the entire book. But it's very interesting, because it describes how at first everyone becomes a sex maniac in attempt to keep the human species alive, and then most lapse into bitter resignation and preach the end of the world, to which I smacked my forehead repeatedly because if they give up trying to save it, no kidding will it die out. Anyway, it would be far worse if sex just didn't work but was still enjoyable, rather than all the pleasure taken out of it although that too would be terrible and make the world a boring place to live.
