I actually re-ran across the essay "Self Reliance" by Emerson, and think that that's the quality that most applies here. Independence has a more political connotation.
I think that, in the scope of this topic, the hardest thing to do when moving from dependence to self reliance (or independance, or individualism) is not escaping inter-person dependence, but it is being able to distance yourself from your past.
On this, Emerson said:
He doesn't specifically say that this is harder, but that's just my own opinion. We are, quite possibly, our own worst judge.
